In Which [personal profile] shadowkitty is a Bad Feminist.

I was thinking about making a new header for myself, of all the female characters I really love to bits. Then I realised the horrifying truth.

There's three of them. Shadowcat, Ace, & Starbuck. This is just embarrassing. All they seem to have in common is that they like explosions & hitting people. I don't know what that says about me... actually I know exactly what that says about me, but never mind.

You would think there would be some from Buffy or Firefly, but no, apparently I don't identify with Joss' women enough. Maybe Zoe. Maybe. I like his male characters just fine. It's strange, because Joss is usually held up as being one of the best at writing women.

But you know what? I wouldn't swap those three for any male character anywhere.

Nah, I don't think you have to love lots of female characters to be a good feminist. (If you even do want to be a good feminist, which I guess is another issue.)

I love tons of female characters though, and I can never quite figure out why when so many people don't.

I'm starting to think this comment sounds off, at least in the sense of "too serious." I was just sort of musing, if that helps.

I think being a tomboy all these years has made me identify more strongly with male characters. At least I know it, I suppose!

I'm asking around about Battle Star Galactia and hopefully there will be links materialising on the "readerservice" entry (I've already got some) Perhaps I should mention your thing for ckr?

Very cool. Thanks! Do you like my new icon?

Whedon's characters are always sort of asexual to me, I mean in the sense of being not particularly coded for either gender (except in clunky I waaaannnnnaaaa have a booooyfriend and great hair! ways that I ignore anyway).

I've yet to find a female character I totally can identify with--as I've ranted extensively before, the women who have exciting lives (Buffy, Joan of Arcadia, Jaye of Wonderfalls, etc) generally resist them for ill-defined reasons, probably because the mostly male writers can't think of a real reason for dramatic tension. *grump*

Now Ace in her 20s...mayhap.

Have you read the New Adventure Doctor Who books? That's got an older Ace. They're out of print, but there are a few available on the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ebooks/index.shtml).

One of the reasons I don't like a lot of female charaters is that they are so often very very poorly written, cast, acted, or concieved of. I like women, I just don't like women who act like men think women act, if you know what I mean.

Ace ftw, not enough Ace in the world. I also like girls who blow crap up.

When I was six, I wanted to be Ace when I grew up. Then I forgot all about it & wondered where the hell my blowing shit up phase came from when I was sixteen!
